DPP files contempt application seeking jail term for Besigye lawyer Eron Kiiza over X posts

Civic Space & Media Freedom Verified Kampala 4 Aug 2026 Severity: 2/5

The Director of Public Prosecutions filed an application in the High Court Criminal Division, received by the registry on 4 August, asking that defence lawyer Eron Kiiza be found guilty of criminal contempt over social media posts about the treason trial of Dr Kizza Besigye, according to court documents seen by Reuters. The DPP asks for a prison term or fine, deletion of the posts, a bar on further comment and a public apology; a police investigator's affidavit alleges the posts attacked a prosecution witness and risked prejudicing the trial. Kiiza had not publicly responded, and no hearing date had been set.
