High Court halts Besigye treason trial, orders medical report on his fitness to stand trial

According to the Daily Monitor, Justice Emmanuel Baguma of the High Court in Kampala stopped proceedings in the treason case against Dr Kizza Besigye, who remained admitted at Mulago hospital, and directed the Commissioner General of Prisons to obtain a medical report on whether he is fit to stand trial. The ruling followed objections by state-appointed defence counsel to the prosecution's attempt to proceed in his absence; the case was adjourned to August 18.
