High Court holds KCCA liable for 2017 drowning of street vendor in Nakivubo channel, awards Shs124.9m

Justice & Court Rulings Verified Kampala 2 Oct 2026 Severity: 1/5

The High Court in Kampala ordered Kampala Capital City Authority to pay about Shs124.9 million to the family of a street vendor who drowned in the Nakivubo drainage channel on August 4, 2017, the Daily Monitor reported. Justice Boniface Wamala found KCCA in breach of its statutory duty to make major drains safe, but held that the plaintiffs had not proved enforcement officers chased her and reduced damages by 30 percent for contributory negligence. The family said KCCA officers pursued the vendor; KCCA denied this.
