High Court orders The Observer and Watchdog publishers to pay Shs50m for defaming ex-FAO staffer

Justice & Court Rulings Single source Kampala 24 Mar 2026 Severity: 1/5

According to URN, as published by The Independent, High Court Judge Collins Acellam found that a 2020 Observer article about the FAO office in Uganda, which the Watchdog website republished, defamed a former FAO livelihood coordinator. The court ordered Observer Media Ltd and Watchdog Communication Ltd to pay Shs50 million in damages between them, take the articles down, apologise and pay costs. Neither company filed a defence, so the case was heard ex parte.
