High Court sets ruling date as DPP opposes bail for ex-SIU commander Agasiirwe in Kagezi murder case

Justice Isaac Muwata of the High Court Criminal Division in Kampala fixed 19 March 2026 for a ruling on the bail application of former Special Investigations Unit commander SSP Nickson Agasiirwe, after both sides filed written submissions. According to The Independent, the Office of the DPP argued that Agasiirwe, charged with the 2015 murder of prosecutor Joan Kagezi, is a flight risk, could interfere with witnesses who are junior police officers, and offered weak sureties. Agasiirwe argues he is entitled to mandatory bail after more than 180 days on remand; he and his co-accused deny the charges.
