High Court upholds EC decision barring Jimmy Akena from UPC presidential ticket

The Daily Monitor reports that Justice Bernard Namanya of the High Court in Kampala dismissed UPC leader Jimmy Akena's petition to compel the Electoral Commission to nominate him, saying nominations had already closed and that the July 26, 2025 virtual delegates' conference extending his presidency defied an interim court order. The judge blocked the Commission from enforcing its declaration that UPC's executive committee had expired, allowing the party to field parliamentary and local council candidates.
