Hotel guard arrested over banana theft found dead in custody at Apac Central Police Station

A 32-year-old hotel askari arrested on 7 March 2026 over the theft of bananas was found dead on Tuesday morning while in custody at Apac Central Police Station, according to the Daily Monitor. A family elder alleged he died handcuffed in the cell and that police falsely said he died at hospital; a relative said he had not been ill. The North Kyoga regional police spokesperson and the Apac RDC said they had not yet been informed.
