Civic Space & Media Freedom Single source Kampala 3 Sep 2026 Severity: 2/5

According to ChimpReports, lawyer Male Mabirizi appeared at Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court and handed in a handwritten guilty plea instead of pursuing bail, saying the conditions set by Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe Kidasa were unlawful and accusing her of bias. Mabirizi, who says he is innocent and has been detained since February 2 on charges under the Computer Misuse Act and Magistrates Courts Act, said he would challenge any conviction on appeal. The court had granted him mandatory bail on August 14 on conditions including a passport deposit, cash bond and sureties; it had not ruled on the written plea at publication.
