Mubende Chief Magistrate declares NRM's Mubangizi Buwekula South MP after court-ordered recount

Justice & Court Rulings Disputed Mubende 28 Jan 2026 Severity: 2/5

According to the Daily Monitor, Mubende Chief Magistrate Norbert Sajjabbi declared NRM candidate Dedan Mubangizi winner of the Buwekula South parliamentary seat after a court-supervised recount of 89 ballot boxes, reversing the Electoral Commission's declaration of Independent Fred Tumwesigye. The recount was ordered on Mr Mubangizi's application, which alleged that votes at some polling stations, including Kibuye, exceeded the ballot papers delivered. Mr Tumwesigye rejected the outcome, alleging procedural irregularities and possible tampering, and his lawyers have applied to the High Court for revision and a stay of the ruling.

Disputed: The magistrate found no evidence of tampering and declared Mr Mubangizi the winner, while Mr Tumwesigye says the recount was legally defective and the ballot boxes may have been tampered with.
