Police and Energy Ministry officials arrest six over unlicensed gold mining in Nyamirama, Kanungu

Police said six people were arrested in an operation by Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development officials and police along the Kibale and Ntungwa streams in Nyamirama Sub-county, Kanungu District, on 1 October. Kigezi regional police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime said preliminary investigations indicated the suspects were mining gold without licences and degrading the environment. The suspects remained in police custody, according to the Daily Monitor.
