Prosecution alleges witness threats in Besigye treason case as High Court hears witness-protection application

Justice & Court Rulings Disputed Kampala 6 May 2026 Severity: 1/5

At the High Court Criminal Division, Chief State Attorney Joseph Kyomuhendo alleged that Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, through an alleged accomplice, threatened six prosecution witnesses whose identities the state wants concealed. Under cross-examination by defence lawyers, he declined to explain how the electronic evidence of the threats was obtained and said he did not know whether the witnesses had reported to police; the defence argued the application was filed late and unsupported. Judge Emmanuel Baguma adjourned the hearing to 28 May 2026.

Disputed: The prosecution says the accused threatened its witnesses, while defence lawyers challenged the evidence for the threats and the delay in filing the application.
