Rival NRM camps clash at Kayunga meeting that picks party flag bearer for district Speaker

Election Related Disputed Kayunga 7 May 2026 Severity: 2/5

According to the Daily Monitor, a meeting of district councillors-elect called by Kayunga NRM district chairperson Moses Karangwa at the party offices in Kayunga Town turned heated, with rival camps nearly coming to blows. District chairperson Andrew Muwonge, who opposed the meeting as illegal because councillors had not yet been sworn in, walked out; the 15 councillors who stayed went on to elect Sula Seruwu as the NRM flag bearer for district Speaker. Karangwa said the meeting was meant to unite the party ahead of the Speaker election.

Disputed: Muwonge said the meeting and the flag bearer election were illegal because councillors-elect had not been sworn in, while Karangwa said the meeting was meant to harmonise the party's position.
