TikTok user charged with publishing fake news and breaching data privacy, remanded in Kampala

Civic Space & Media Freedom Verified Kampala 5 Oct 2026 Severity: 2/5

A TikTok user appeared before Buganda Road Chief Magistrate's Court and was charged with publishing fake news under the Uganda Communications (Licensing) Regulations and with unlawfully obtaining and disclosing personal data under the Data Protection and Privacy Act. Prosecutors allege that a video on the @Mr.Accountability account falsely claimed a man had used guns to evict people from land, and that it used his photograph without consent. According to the Daily Monitor, he denied the charges and was remanded until 19 October after the court declined to hear his bail application because his lawyers had no valid practising certificates.
