Trade ministry and sugar stakeholders agree to limit weighbridges to weighing and ban cane trading at the sites

Policy & Legislation Verified Kampala 17 Feb 2026 Severity: 1/5

At a meeting chaired by State Minister for Trade Gen Wilson Mbadi at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, farmers, millers, security agencies and local leaders agreed that sugarcane weighbridges will only weigh cane, with no buying or selling at the sites. According to The Independent, the stakeholders also agreed to move weighbridges away from cane trading zones, to have trucks carry cane directly from fields to factories, and to brand trucks for traceability, after complaints that roadside weighbridges were providing markets for stolen cane.
