Traders displaced as investor fences off part of Rushebeya Market land in Rukiga; leaders appeal to President

Policy & Legislation Disputed Rukiga 13 Apr 2026 Severity: 2/5

According to the Daily Monitor, hundreds of traders at Rushebeya Market in Rwamucucu Sub-county found part of the market land fenced off by an investor claiming ownership, and had to crowd into the remaining section. Traders and local leaders appealed to President Museveni to intervene, saying an earlier presidential directive to compensate the investor had not been implemented. The land was sold at auction in 2017 after the sub-county failed to pay a court award.

Disputed: The investor claims ownership of the land through a court-ordered auction chain, while traders and sub-county leaders say it is community market land and seek government compensation to keep it.
