Unknown people demolish structure at Owino (St. Balikuddembe) Market in Kampala overnight

According to the Daily Monitor, unknown individuals demolished a key structure in St. Balikuddembe (Owino) Market overnight on 7 March 2026 without official notice, prompting accusations of foul play. Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa later said in a statement that he had leased one of the affected plots in 2018 but had been compensated by KCCA, which took possession about three years ago, and denied any link to the demolition.
