Electoral Commission dismisses 13 election officials in Busia's Buhehe Sub-county over alleged register tampering

Electoral Malpractice Disputed Busia Aug 2026 (day not reported) Severity: 2/5

The Electoral Commission dismissed a sub-county supervisor and 12 village registrars deployed in Buhehe Sub-county, Busia District, accusing them of altering village registers and colluding with contestants in the LC I elections, The Independent/URN reported. District Returning Officer Joan Aduru said investigations found their actions forced repeat elections in some villages and led to violence. The dismissed supervisor, Andrew Ogema, and a village registrar denied tampering with the register and called the dismissal unfair.

Disputed: The Electoral Commission says the officials tampered with registers and colluded with contestants; the dismissed supervisor and a registrar deny this and say they followed EC guidelines but were overwhelmed by local disputes and violence.
