Fisheries minister orders impounding of 402 illegal fishing nets at URA customs warehouse in Jinja City

Environmental Issues Disputed Jinja 13 Aug 2026 Severity: 1/5

According to the Daily Monitor, State Minister for Fisheries Robert Migadde inspected a customs-bonded warehouse in Jinja City after a delay and an argument with URA officials and warehouse management over access, and then ordered 402 prohibited fishing nets impounded, giving the owner 30 days to comply. Journalists were kept out of the warehouse, which the minister said was because other goods there were subject to separate URA matters. An unnamed URA official said the consignment had already been seized at the border and that the minister was delayed, not blocked, while authorisation to break the URA seal was sought.

Disputed: The article reports that the minister's team was halted at the gate, while a URA official says the minister was only delayed pending authorisation to break the seal and that URA had already seized the consignment.
