Masaka magistrate halts Kalungu East vote recount sought by Ssempijja after five ballot boxes found tampered with

Justice & Court Rulings Verified Kalungu 27 Jan 2026 Severity: 2/5

Masaka Chief Magistrate Abert Asiimwe called off a vote recount for the Kalungu East parliamentary seat, sought by NRM candidate and former minister Vincent Ssempijja against NUP winner Yusuf Kiruluuta Nkeretaanyi, after finding at Kalungu District Electoral Commission offices that five ballot boxes had improper or broken seals. The magistrate ruled that the tampering frustrated the purpose of the recount and advised Ssempijja to file an election petition in the High Court, according to the Daily Monitor. Ssempijja's lawyer said his client maintained there had been vote inflation.
