Masaka magistrate halts Kalungu West vote recount after finding broken seals on six ballot boxes

Justice & Court Rulings Verified Kalungu 23 Jan 2026 Severity: 2/5

Masaka Chief Magistrate Albert Asiimwe stopped a court-ordered recount of the Kalungu West parliamentary vote after six of the 102 ballot boxes were found with broken seals, and others had no seals or labels. According to the Daily Monitor, he ruled that the recount's purpose had been frustrated and referred independent candidate Ismael Ssemakula to the High Court; security and EC officials could not say how the seals were broken.
