Parliament Budget Committee MPs question Orion's capacity to supply radios under Shs 336.8bn contract

Corruption & Abuse of Office Disputed Mukono 12 Nov 2020 Severity: 1/5

Members of Parliament on the Budget Committee visited Orion Transformers and Electrics Limited in Namanve industrial park and said the firm, which the Ministry of Education was fronting to supply radio sets for distance learning, lacked the capacity to make them locally, according to ChimpReports. The MPs said the two radios found at the company had been shipped from China, and they agreed it should not be awarded the emergency supply contract. In a statement the following day, Orion rejected the MPs' claims and said it had ten production lines able to assemble 100,000 radios a day.

Disputed: The MPs said Orion cannot produce the radios locally and that the sets found there were imported from China, while Orion said it has the production lines and financial capacity to supply them.
