Police and NUP supporters clash for hours in Mbale; Kyagulanyi rally at Mbale stadium cut short

Violence & Conflict Verified Mbale 15 Nov 2020 Severity: 3/5

The Observer reports that police used teargas and live bullets in running battles with Kyagulanyi supporters for more than seven hours in Mbale, after heavily armed police and army officers met the NUP candidate on his entry to the town and set up roadblocks. Police cut short his rally at Mbale city stadium, saying campaign time had passed; the Mbale district police commander had said no processions would be allowed. A regional police spokesman said supporters defied security guidelines by holding processions, while Kyagulanyi accused police of brutality and called on the Electoral Commission to act.
