Tororo court dismisses Sarah Opendi's vote recount application over tampered ballot boxes

Justice & Court Rulings Verified Tororo 27 Jan 2026 Severity: 2/5

The Chief Magistrate's Court in Tororo dismissed NRM candidate Sarah Opendi's application for a recount in the Tororo District Woman MP race, which the Electoral Commission had declared for independent Angella Akoth by 35 votes. According to the Daily Monitor, the court had ordered a recount on 23 January, but on inspection two ballot boxes were found with broken seals, and the magistrate ruled that the tampering made a recount impossible and upheld Akoth's win. Opendi had alleged ballot stuffing and falsified figures at 11 polling stations.
